Tipping Points: Episode 19

Stuck on mitigation:
why climate efforts have tipped away from adaptation.
Mitigation is a major element in fighting climate change, but adaptation conversations took a back seat at COP28. Why is adaptation action lagging, and what can we do about it?

Three expert panellists will debate the issues on Episode 19 of the OGRC ‘Tipping Points’ series, titled ‘Stuck on mitigation: why climate efforts have tipped away from adaptation’.

The panellists:
Peter Makumbe – Research manager at Oppenheimer Research and Conservation, who will draw on examples of holistic management at Shangani Holistic in Zimbabwe to illustrate adaptation in action; Dr Joyce Kimutai – A climate scientist who researches extreme weather events and will provide suggestions on how to assess adaptation measures.
Dr Laura Pereira – A researcher at the Global Change Institute at Wits University who will give insight on research and civil society perspectives around adaptation and mitigation.

The facilitator is Dr Christopher Trisos, who directs the African Synthesis Centre for Climate Change Environment and Development (ASCEND) at University of Cape Town.
